Tekoh, a case concerning Miranda warnings. In March 2014, Terence Tekoh was detained by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for sexual assault allegations, with deputy Carlos Vega failing to give Mr. Tekoh a Miranda warning. Mr. Tekoh confessed to the charge in a written statement, and was subsequently prosecuted for the allegation. At his trial, the government introduced Mr. Tekoh’s statement that was made without his being read his Miranda rights, and he was ultimately acquitted. Mr. Tekoh then sued Mr. Vega, asserting he violated his rights under Miranda v. Arizona by not warning him of his right to remain silent. Two juries held that Vega had not violated Miranda.
On June 23, 2022, the Court ruled 6-3 that a police officer cannot be sued under federal civil rights laws for violating a person’s Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination by failing to provide a Miranda warning.

The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Vega v. Tekoh, a case concerning Miranda warnings.
