Bremerton, a case on whether a high school football coach praying at the 50-yard line is protected religious expression and free speech. Joseph Kennedy coached at Bremerton High School in Washington state between 2008 and 2015, and was known to pray with his players before and after games including at the 50-yard line, with no complaints. In September 2015, the school district told him to stop but said he could “engage in religious activity, including prayer, so long as it does not interfere with job responsibilities.” He stopped the prayers and religious speeches prior to and after games but continued to kneel and pray silently at the end. The school district then told him to end all “demonstrative religious activity.” Coach Kennedy filed suit accusing the school district of violating his rights to free speech and free exercise.
