The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Nance v. Ward, a case on a Georgia death row inmate’s legal effort to be executed by a firing squad instead of lethal injection because of his medical conditions. Michael Nance, the inmate at the center of this case, was convicted of murder in 1997 and sentenced to death. This case concerns not the constitutionality of the inmate’s request to die by firing squad but rather on the legal route he took to challenge Georgia’s method of execution. The Court would decide which legal procedures death row prisoners may take to dispute a state’s execution method. close
