Within the agency there are more than 25 institutes and centers. A few leaders from these institutes and centers testified, including Lawrence Tabak, acting NIH director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Fauci said it is not yet the time to remove the public health emergency status. In addition to COVID-19, other topics addressed included funding for Alzheimer’s disease research, cancer treatments, combating drug addiction and overdose deaths, maternal and infant care, mental health care, and studying the effects of marijuana usage in states where it is legal.
