Agriculture Department Fiscal Year 2023 Budget Request

Secretary Vilsack expressed concern about funding for his department, saying “non-defense discretionary spending over the last eight or nine years has grown by 27.4 percent across all departments, while the USDA’s discretionary budget has grown by about 14.3 percent--roughly half.” He argued his department needs more funds for staffing, research, and rural housing. He also told the lawmakers that thousands of farmers were experiencing financial hardship and in need of urgent assistance. Senators questioned him on a variety of issues, including disaster assistance amid droughts, wildfires, and floods. They also asked about the implementation and finances of various agricultural programs and initiatives.
