In a 49-51 vote, the Senate blocked consideration of a bill to protect a woman’s right to have an abortion. Sixty votes were needed to begin debate and amend the bill. All Republicans voted against it, and Senator Joe Manchin (WV) was the only Democrat who voted “no.” Democrats brought the measure to the floor in response to a recently-leaked Supreme Court draft opinion obtained by Politico indicating a majority of the justices would overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling. Members also confirmed Alvaro Bedoya to the Federal Trade Commission; Julia Gordon, assistant housing secretary and Federal Housing Administration commissioner; and Philip Jefferson to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Vice President Kamala Harris cast tiebreaking votes on both invoking cloture on and confirmation of two of those nominations. Senators also voted to discharge from the Judiciary Committee Charlotte Sweeney’s nomination to be a U.S. District judge for the District of Colorado. close
