Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Bryan Newland brief reporters on the recent investigation into federal Indian boarding schools that found evidence of marked and unmarked burial sites at 53 of those institutions. Secretary Haaland said the boarding schools were part of a “twin” U.S. policy meant for the disposition of Native American land and the forced assimilation of Native American children. They operated from 1819 to 1969 across 37 states, with many funded or sponsored by religious institutions. close
