FDA Commissioner Testifies on Baby Formula Shortage

The shortage was caused by the February 2022 closing of the major manufacturer of infant formula plant in the U.S, Abbott Nutrition, after the FDA found unsanitary conditions at Abbott’s Michigan plant. The company also issued a recall of its formula products after reports of babies becoming ill. Senators from both parties pressed Dr. Califf on the FDA’s handling of the shortage. Dr. Califf acknowledged both in this hearing and prior congressional hearings that the agency’s response was slow. He pledged to lawmakers and parents the agency was working overtime to ease the shortage and get more formula onto store shelves.
