Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Admiral James Stavridis (Ret.) talked about the status of the alliance during a virtual discussion with the American Security Project. The conversation happened one day after the conclusion of a NATO summit in Madrid, Spain, which was held amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Admiral Stavridis discussed a number of topics relating to the NATO and its strategy. He criticized the idea of NATO enlargement provoking Russia, and said Finland and Sweden’s prospective memberships would be “nothing but plus.” He also touched on Turkey’s role in the alliance, ongoing threats and security challenges from Russia and China, and climate change. close
