They talked about a series of bids from states vying to hold the earliest Democratic primaries and caucuses in the 2024 presidential race, and which criteria they were hoping to use in choosing those states. Since 2008, Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada have been first, although Iowa and New Hampshire have been among the first for decades longer. Under the proposed changes, five states would be allowed to hold votes before March 5, 2024. Applications from 17 states were being considered.
