Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed condolences on behalf of the United States after the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He said the killing is “shocking” and “profoundly disturbing in and of itself.” The secretary called Prime Minister Abe an “extraordinary partner” to the U.S. and a “great leader” for his country. Former Prime Minister Abe was assassinated earlier in the day while delivering a campaign speech in Nara, Japan. Secretary Blinken’s remarks came as he’s in Indonesia for the G20 Foreign Minister’s Meeting. close
