A ceremony was held honoring the late World War II veteran Hershel Woodrow Williams as he lay in honor in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Also known as “Woody,” Chief Warrant Officer Williams was the last living Medal of Honor recipient from the second World War. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) paid tribute to the late veteran and spoke about his legacy. Also, executive branch leaders representing the military--Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Mark Milley--silently paid their respects, as well as members of Congress and others. Mr. Williams died on June 29, 2022, at age 98. close
