The House debated a bill that would authorize $839.3 billion for fiscal year 2023 defense programs. The package would authorize billions of dollars for weapons being sent to Ukraine to respond to Russia’s invasion and $6 billion for the Pacific Deterrence Initiative to optimize the presence of U.S. forces in the region to counter China. It also removes the prosecution of sexual harassment cases in the military from the chain of command and eliminates restrictions on the transfer of detainees from the prison at Guantanamo Bay that have hindered efforts to close the facility. close
