FAA, and Homeland Security and Justice Department officials testified that more than 2 million drones are authorized to fly in U.S. airspace, and warned of the growing threat these unmanned aircraft systems pose. Brad Wiegmann, Justice Department deputy assistant attorney general of the National Security Division, said, “there is a very significant threat” of a drone attack on a mass gathering in the country, warning that it is “only a matter of time.” Acting Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism with the Homeland Security Department Samantha Vinograd warned drones flying near airports pose the threat of deaths and spoke about several near misses around the country. Other topics included cartels using drones to smuggle illegal drugs into the country and contraband into prisons. Congress in 2018 passed the Preventing Emerging Threats Act, which is set to expire in October 2022, that gave federal officials the authority to manage drone usage. close
