House members debated a measure that makes the Supreme Court’s 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade law, which protects a woman’s right to an abortion. The House passed two bills on abortion rights to safeguard the procedure after the overturn of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court at the end of the 2021-22 term. The first bill, the Women’s Health Protection Act, seeks to codify the right to the procedure into federal law and passed 219-210 with one Democrat opposing. The second bill protects women who travel to another state to receive an abortion if it is outlawed in their home state and passed 223-205 with three Republicans joining all of the Democrats in favor. close
