“This is a five-alarm emergency, and I’ve never seen a food security crisis like this in my career,” said U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield as she testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the global food security crisis. She further said that “this is the kind of problem that no one nation can solve alone,” as she stressed the need for cooperation and burden sharing among partner countries and allies. During her opening testimony, USAID Administrator Samantha Power addressed several of the factors, such as droughts and the COVID-19 pandemic, as contributing to the food crisis. She also pointed to Russia President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine “and his ongoing, devastating use of food as a weapon of war.” David Beasley, the executive director for the World Food Program, also testified, expressing concern that the world may experience a food availability crisis in the coming year if the current food security crisis cannot be mitigated. close
