During a House Select Intelligence Committee hearing, technology security experts warned about the growing threat of foreign-made commercial spyware. The witnesses from Google’s Threat Analysis Group and Citizen Lab spoke specifically about the Israeli based NSO Group and its spyware Pegasus. John Scott-Railton with Citizen Lab explained that the technology allows nation states to access consumers' texts, phone calls, encrypted chats, and photos. Carine Kanimba, the daughter of imprisoned Rwandan dissident Paul Rusesabagina, explained how she had been the victim of this spyware. Ms. Kanimba, whose father’s story was the basis for the film “Hotel Rwanda,” claimed the Rwandan government had been tracking her and a sibling through their phones using spyware. The witnesses spoke about ways the government can prevent proliferation of spyware in technology sold in the U.S. and methods to disincentivize investors from funding companies that develop this technology. close
