During a State Department briefing amid the sixth month of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he would speak with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the coming days about trying to release American citizens Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, whom Blinken said were being wrongfully detained. Secretary Blinken said the U.S. put a “substantial proposal on the table weeks ago to facilitate their release” from Russia. Regarding the invasion, he said a tentative deal was made the previous week between Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, and the United Nations for Russia to end its blockade of grain and other exports coming out of Ukraine’s ports. The secretary also said that Russia’s reasons for the invasion keep changing, but a real reason is that President Putin does not respect Ukraine’s sovereignty. Finally, Secretary Blinken reiterated that the invasion has made NATO stronger and that sanctions against Russia are working. close
