President Biden gave an overview of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. He said the legislation includes the following: allows Medicare to negotiate with drug companies for more affordable prescription drugs, locks in lower health care premiums for the next three years under the Affordable Care Act, makes investments of approximately $369 billion for climate change programs, raises taxes on wealthiest corporations and individuals, reduces the deficit by roughly $300 billion over a decade, and does not raise taxes on individuals making less than $400,000. His remarks came one day after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced an agreement on the bill, after several months of negotiations. Congress was expected to work on the legislation the following week. The president added that the U.S. is not in a recession, amid news that the economy shrank by 0.9 percent in the second quarter. close
