House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters he does not recall speaking to former White House aid Cassidy Hutchinson during the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. “I don’t recall talking to her that day ... if I talked to her, I don’t remember it,” said the leader. Ms. Hutchinson told the January 6 Committee investigating the attack that he called her and implored her not to have former President Trump come to the Capitol that day. The Republican leader made the remarks during his first solo news conference in months. He also addressed the state of the U.S. economy, arguing the nation is in a recession after the gross domestic product shrank two quarters in a row. Rep. McCarthy criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for a proposal to address lawmakers and their families purchasing stocks after media reports of her husband buying stocks in a computer chip company days before votes on legislation that would have given subsidies to the industry. close
