U.N. Security Council Meeting on Russian Invasion of Ukraine

“Russia has put the world on the brink of a radiation catastrophe,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as he virtually addressed the United Nations Security Council on the evolving crisis in his country spurred by Russia’s invasion. He continued, “It is a fact, that the Russian military has turned the territory of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe … into a war-zone.” He said Russia’s shelling of the area and “deployment of terrorists on the territory of the station under the Russian flag,” has increased the threat of nuclear disaster in Europe. The Russian ambassador to the U.N., Vasily Nebenza, refuted president Zelensky’s claims, saying the “Ukrainian regime” is orchestrating the attacks near the nuclear power plant and putting Europe at risk. Other members of the Security Council, including U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, condemned Russia’s actions and called for their immediate withdrawal from Ukraine. close
