White House Deputy Director of the National Economic Council Bharat Ramamurti said it was a “double standard” on the part of Republicans who pressured for the forgiveness of COVID relief Paycheck Protection Program loans - some as high as $10 million - to a business owner but criticize the Biden administration for student loan debt relief. Mr. Ramamurti stated that “if we want to provide $10,000, or $20,000 in loan relief to a teacher, or a bus driver, or a nurse, all of a sudden its socialism? That’s what doesn’t compute from our view. We don’t think that is consistent.” His comments came as he joined Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at the daily White House press briefing. When asked about the investigation and seizure of classified documents from former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, Ms. Jean-Pierre declined to comment, saying the administration wants to respect the “independence” of the Justice Department and could not comment on an ongoing investigation. close
