The Federalist Society hosted a virtual event on data privacy in relation to abortion access. A panel of legal practitioners and scholars debated the seriousness of the government potentially surveilling citizens' private digital information--like location tracking, internet searches, and app data--in order to prosecute abortion in states where the procedure is illegal. The discussion came in light of the June 2022 Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which gave states the authority to make abortion illegal. The panelists also discussed various types of privacy, such as digital communications versus app data, and debated privacy as it relates to multiple issues, such as other kinds of personal health. close
