U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said U.N. members must defend the charter and vote yes to a resolution to condemn Russia’s illegal annexation of Ukrainian land. China’s Ambassador Geng Shuang said his country would be abstaining from the vote because the resolution is not helpful to achieve dialogue and peace between Russia and Ukraine. Earlier in the week the U.N. General Assembly voted to reject Russia’s request for the vote to be by secret ballot. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and continues to carry out military strikes across the country. UN General Assembly voted to adopt the resolution 143 in favor, 5 against, and 25 abstentions. close
