Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the CEOs of General Electric and United Airlines discussed the current state and future of the aviation industry with the Washington Post Live. Secretary Buttigieg explained why there were many flight delays and cancellations during the summer of 2022, saying, “demand came back more quickly than the airline sector was ready to support.” He also described how the Department of Transportation is trying to improve the passenger experience, such as more transparency required for airlines. Also, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby discussed how his company and the industry are trying to be more ecologically sustainable and predicted that the recently-passed Inflation Reduction Act would be “one of the most consequential pieces of legislation passed in the last 30 years,” due to its environmental provisions. close
