“When viewers watched Bernie, they saw first and foremost, a journalist they could trust,” said CNN’s Wolf Blitzer during CNN’s memorial service for Bernard Shaw at the National Press Club. Mr. Shaw was the first African American anchor in cable news and CNN’s first chief anchor, retiring from the network after more than 20 years. Colleagues and friends shared stories and recollections of their time with Mr. Shaw, including PBS Newshour anchor Judy Woodruff, who shared the anchor desk with Bernard Shaw at CNN. She referred to him as her “work husband.” Throughout the service video clips and photos from Mr. Shaw’s career were shown.
