Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said China remains a “pacing challenge” for the United States and called Russia an “acute threat” as he announced the release of the unclassified National Defense Strategy to the public. As the secretary touched on nuclear pursuits from adversaries, including Russia, Iran, and North Korea, he discussed the country’s nuclear posture review, saying, “as long as nuclear weapons exist, the fundamental role of U.S. nuclear weapons is to deter nuclear attack on the United States, our allies, and our partners.” He also addressed military modernization, troop readiness, support for military members and their families, and the war in Ukraine. When asked about the likelihood of Russia using tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine, he said they have been concerned about that threat since the beginning of Russia’s invasion but have not seen any indication Russia plans to do so. close
