The House Rules Committee convened the hearing to examine the law and procedural steps needed to have a Cherokee Nation delegate become a member of the House of Representatives. Cherokee Nation representation is promised in the Treaty of Echota. This more than 150-year-old treaty was ratified by the Senate and signed into law by President Andrew Jackson in 1836. There is bipartisan support in the committee to move forward with the process.
