Following the opening prayer, pledge of allegiance, and one-minute speeches, Speaker Pelosi announced that she would not seek a leadership position in the 118th Congress, saying, “For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect.” She said she would, however, continue to represent San Francisco in California’s 11th Congressional District. Her announcement came one day after House Republicans clinched a majority of seats for the 118th Congress. Thereafter, the House debated two suspension bills dealing with wildfire preparedness and response efforts, and voted on several suspension bills debated earlier in the week.
