Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that his was appointing Jack Smith as special counsel to oversee investigations involving former President Donald Trump. Those investigations include the possible retention of classified documents at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago home and his involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol during the transfer of power for the presidency. The attorney general explained that appointing a special counsel was “in the public interest” amid former President Trump’s recent announcement that he would run again for president. He outlined Mr. Smith’s credentials, including his role as chief prosecutor in The Hague, where he investigated war crimes committed during the Kosovo War, as well as his federal experience. close
