The hearing came seven months after the Court’s draft to overturn abortion rights in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was leaked to the media. Amid this incident, Reverend Schenck alleged that in 2014 Justice Alito leaked the decision Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. to conservative activists. Republicans said the allegations were hearsay and criticized Reverend Schenck’s credibility, but Democrats and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) called for passage of Supreme Court ethics legislation and transparency. Alleged conflicts of interest were also discussed during the hearing, such as unreported dinners, gifts, and trips given from conservative donors to justices.
