“It’s time to pass the torch to a new generation, and it’s time to come home,” said Representative Jackie Speier (D-CA), who was retiring from Congress after 15 years in the House of Representatives. Her comments came as she spoke with C-SPAN to reflect on her life and career in politics. The representative spoke about her work on legislation addressing sexual assault in the military and gun violence, and said she would not lose her voice when she leaves Congress. Rep. Speier also touched on her experience as a staffer for the late Representative Leo Ryan (D-CA) when in 1978 they were ambushed in Jonestown, Guyana, and she was shot five times. Representative Ryan died from the incident, along with four others. They were in the country to investigate religious cult leader Jim Jones and his People’s Temple. close
