President Biden said “welcome home Brittney” as he announced the U.S. had secured the release of WNBA player Britney Griner from a Russian prison and that she was on a plane headed for America. While he is happy about her release, the president also acknowledged the administration was not able to secure the release of Paul Whelan, in Russian custody since 2018. The president stressed that the U.S. continues to negotiate with Russia to free Mr. Whelan. Ms. Griner’s release was a part of a prisoner trade with Russia for convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout. close
