The Senate Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Investigations held a hearing to examine the facts of sexual abuse of women in federal prisons. In the first panel, three former inmates testified on the sexual abuse they experienced by employees while incarcerated, and an expert on sexual abuse in custodial settings also testified. In the second panel, the committee questioned the Justice Department’s inspector general and the Federal Bureau of Prison’s new director, who began the position four months ago. This hearing was part of a two-year bipartisan effort by the subcommittee to investigate conditions of incarceration and detention in the United States. close
