The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis held a hearing on preparing for and preventing public health emergencies, and lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials who worked during the early part of the pandemic testified about successes, such as the benefits of decades-long government investments in mRNA vaccine technology, and areas of improvement, such as decreasing public health racial disparities. Some members urged the government to do better at investigating COVID-19's origins. After the witnesses left, the subcommittee formally adopted its final report into the congressional record. Its findings, which detail more than two years of investigative work, include an assessment of the Trump administration’s performance at the start of the pandemic, identification of more than $7 billion in questionable pandemic relief, data about COVID-19 misinformation, for-profit nursing home chain practices, and recommendations for future public health and economic emergencies. close
