Viewers commented on the House floor election for speaker of the House as the third day of the 118th Congress ended without the election of a speaker. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for the seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th, and 11th times failed to get the majority 218 votes needed to be elected speaker of the House. This was the first time since 1923 that the House of Representatives failed to elect a speaker on the first vote. close
