Viewers commented on the House floor election for speaker of the House. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for the 12th and 13th times failed to get the majority 218 votes needed to be elected speaker of the House. This was the first time since 1923 that the House of Representatives failed to elect a speaker on the first vote. States Newsroom reporter Jennifer Shutt spoke by phone about how Leader McCarthy gained more votes in the 12th and 13th votes. close
