House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Adam Smith (D-WA) talked about defense policy. He described international threats that he labeled as “CRINGE,” an acronym for China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and global extremism, and said their common goals are “to blow up” the rules-based order and to weaken U.S. influence. He then said ways of curbing CRINGE’s “autocratic ambitions” include military deterrence, reducing tensions, and maintaining alliances with other nations. During the event, Representative Smith was interrupted by anti-nuclear war protesters from the left-wing advocacy group Code Pink, who called for negotiations with Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine. Representative Smith later responded to the protests, saying, “it’s a bit of a myth” that U.S. defense officials are not having conversations with their Russian counterparts, but added that Russian President Vladimir Putin was not interested in negotiations and his goals to invade had not changed. close
