Taamneh, a case on whether social media aided and abetted global terrorism by allowing ISIS to post recruitment, fundraising, and other content on their sites. The families of four victims killed in three separate ISIS attacks filed civil suits under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), arguing that Twitter and other social media platforms provided support and assistance to ISIS, and thereby aided and abetted ISIS for allowing their content and message to be advanced. A U.S. Court of Appeals consolidated the cases and held one of the family’s satisfied their aiding and abetting liability claim. Twitter, with support from Facebook and Google, appealed to the Supreme Court. The Court on the previous day heard a similar case on social media liability for recommended content algorithms. Both cases' rulings are seen by experts to have potentially major implications for the future of tech companies and social media platforms.
