“We were not given a heads up,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about Attorney General Merrick Garland’s appointment of Special Counsel Robert Hur to investigate President Biden’s alleged mishandling of classified documents. She was joined during a press briefing with White House Public Engagement Director and Senior Adviser Keisha Lance Bottoms, who previewed President Biden’s upcoming visit to Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta amid Martin Luther King Jr. Day--the first sitting president to speak at a Sunday service in the church’s history. Moreover, in regard to the U.S. hitting the debt limit on January 19, the press secretary said the administration is communicating with House members but would not negotiate with Republicans on cutting spending in order to avoid default. She also announced that President Biden had accepted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) invitation to give the State of the Union Address on February 7. close
