Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper discussed the Russia-Ukraine War, China, and other global issues affecting the U.S. defense industrial base. He also discussed stories about his time serving in the Trump administration, such as former President Trump telling him and other military officials to shoot at George Floyd protesters and Mr. Esper’s disagreement about plans for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan, which, he said “likely contributed to my firing” as defense secretary. Mark Esper is the author of A Sacred Oath: Memoirs of a Secretary of Defense During Extraordinary Times, which was published in May 2022. The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C hosted this event. close
