President Biden announced from the White House that the U.S. is sending 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine amid the large-scale Russian invasion of the country. He went on to say that the aid was in coordination with NATO allies, who are also providing weapons and equipment, such as more than a dozen Leopard 2 tanks from Germany. The president was joined by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who did not speak. The Abrams was developed during the Cold War; it was first used in combat in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. close
