The Pentagon disputed China’s claim that a Chinese spy balloon, moving east in U.S. airspace, is for weather research. Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, a spokesperson for the Defense Department, said the U.S. is communicating with China and stressed to them the balloon is in violation of U.S. and international law. Mr. Ryder was asked multiple times by reporters why the military hds not shot down the balloon. He said they were reviewing options, but stressed the balloon’s size is quite large and the potential debris from shooting it down could result in severe injury or death on the ground. close
