Secretary Patrick Mayhew announced to the British House of Commons that the British government and the Irish Republic Army (IRA) have, for some time, participated in private negotiations concerning the eventual termination of violence in the region. He read a February correspondence between the two sides stating that “the conflict is over” and peace concessions must be agreed to. Following opening statements by a number of Northern Ireland and Great Britain officials, members, including Leader Paisley, questioned the officials concerning the their continual denials. During an exchange, Leader Paisley was removed for calling Secretary Mayhew a “liar.” close
