The Supreme Court heard oral argument in United States v. Hansen, concerning a federal law banning the encouragement of unlawful immigration and whether that law violates free speech protections. Helaman Hansen and his organization, the Americans Helping America Chamber of Commerce (AHA), ran a program charging people hundreds to thousands of dollars claiming to help noncitizens gain citizenship. Federal authorities said Mr. Hansen told people they could become citizens via adult adoption, and in two situations he told them to stay in America illegally. He and the organization received nearly $2 million for participation in this program. In 2017, Mr. Hansen was convicted on numerous charges, including two for encouraging unlawful immigration for financial gain.
The Court ruled 7-2 that the law does not violate the First Amendment. close
