Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, who stepped down days before this hearing, testified on his coffee chain’s treatment of union organizing efforts. Senate Labor Committee Bernie Sanders (I-VT) pressed Mr. Schultz on alleged retaliation against employees, such as cutting workers' weekly hours, the number of which are directly tied to health insurance and other benefits. Mr. Schultz insisted that no labor laws were broken, saying, “under the law, we did not have the unilateral right to provide those benefits to partners who were involved in collective bargaining.” Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) contradicted his claim, citing a July 2022 letter from unionized employees that waived any objection to union members receiving the same wage and benefit improvements that were received by non-union members. In a heated exchange, Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) accused Sen. Sanders of hypocrisy in his criticism of wealthy business people. Senator Sanders responded that his accusation was full of untruths. close
