Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed the downing of a U.S. MQ-9 drone in international airspace after a Russian fighter jet harassed and then collided with it. The press secretary said U.S. military leadership called “on the Russians to conduct themselves professionally and safely.' When asked if the collision with the drone "was an accident on Russia’s behalf,” Brig. Gen. Ryder said they continue to assess what happened, but “based on the actions of the Russian pilots, it’s clear that it was unsafe, unprofessional, and I think the actions speak for themselves.” Joining the press secretary at the podium was Acting Defense Undersecretary for Policy Mara Karlin, who discussed the recently announced nuclear-powered submarine deal with Australia and the United Kingdom as part of the Australia-United Kingdom-United States (AUKUS) Partnership to secure and stabilize the Indo-Pacific Region.
