President Clinton addressed the Democratic Leadership Council annual meeting discussing his administration’s first year. It represented the first opportunity for a Democratic president to address the council since President Carter left office in 1981. President Clinton discussed his aggressive legislative agenda for the future. In addition, he cited his administration’s first year accomplishments including the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, and the North American Free Trade Agreement. He criticized his presidential predecessors for “exalting political rhetoric over political reality and...\f2for being\fR willing...to let the perfect become the enemy of the good.” Following the president’s speech, he left for California and New Mexico to advocate his health care reform plan. close
