The Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Food and Nutrition, chaired by Senator John Fetterman (D-PA), held a hearing on federal food assistance funding in the upcoming farm bill reauthorization. It was Senator Fetterman’s first time chairing the subcommittee following an extended absence while he sought treatment for clinical depression. During the hearing, five witnesses talked about the impact and ongoing needs of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as well as potential impacts of proposals to cut or add restrictions to the program. The hearing occurred amid discussions by House Republicans to cut funding from the program as part of a deal to raise the national debt limit. close
