The House Rules Committee debated a Republican bill that would tie an increase in the nation’s debt limit to cuts in spending. The Republican majority said their bill was the “responsible way” to deal with the country’s debt, citing the rescission of unobligated COVID-19 pandemic funds and tax incentives related to President Biden’s climate agenda. They also took aim at additional funding for the IRS and student loan forgiveness. Democrats argued that the Republican plan to cut 22% of non-military discretionary spending would cut funding for veteran’s services and health care; the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program; and SNAP and Meals-on-Wheels benefits for vulnerable communities. They also touched on the impact the Republican plan would have on education, border security, combating the fentanyl crisis, and rail and transportation safety. Members also debated a bill that would prohibit the lifting of tariffs on solar energy components manufactured in China. close
